Barriers To Homelessness

I thought it might be helpful if we understood the Barriers to Homelessness a little better. Most often there is more than one barrier affecting how or why a person becomes homeless. It seems to act like the “domino effect”. Once one thing goes wrong, so does everything else. We’ve all had those experiences.

I’d invite you think about what would happen to you if any one or more of these things happened to you. And remember, not everyone lives near their family and may not have the support systems in place like we do.

Below are just some of the reasons a person may be homeless:

  • Low Education and Literacy
  • Work History Gaps
  • Lack of Transportation
  • Family Obligations
  • Lack of Stable Address or Phone
  • Lack of Good Hygiene or Clothing
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Poor Health
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Mental Health Issues
  • Substance Abuse Issues
  • Criminal Records
  • Weak Labor Markets
  • Discrimination
  • Job Loss
